SEO Friendly Directory

These days, there are literally thousands of online directories that range in size from small niche directories that collect a few links to closely related sites in one place, and are used by a small group of users through to enormous directories like DMOZ and the Yahoo directory, which rival the main search engines, and attempt to categorize the whole of the internet into easy to understand and sensible groups.

Although many users still find sites that they want through using directories, many web masters tend to use directories solely as a source of back links for their web sites. With thousands of directories on the Internet, choosing which ones to submit a site to can be a tricky proposition. There simply isn’t enough time to add a web site to every online directory.

If you are looking for links rather than traffic, then it is important to make sure that you submit your website to a so called SEO Friendly Directory. These are a particular class of directories that work in the same way as all other directory sites, in that they collate sites into particular categories; however they provide links to web sites that can be followed by search engine spiders (the computer programs that index the web) as well as people.

The key to a particular web site ranking well in the results at Google and other main search engines is to have plenty of high quality back links from relevant websites that can be found and followed by the search engines.

Some directories place a rel=”nofollow” attribute on all links that go out from them, and this stops the search engines placing any value on the link. There are a number of reasons why a web master may do this, they may only offer crawlable links to featured or paid sites, or they may think that they can hoard PageRank by not passing anything to external links. Other webmasters apply a re-direct to all links out of their directory, which again stop the search engine spiders from crawling the links.

A SEO Friendly directory does none of these, and instead is friendly to the intentions of webmasters and search engine optimizers and allows them to enjoy all the benefits of having a link to their site from a relevant page in their directory.

Unless you are keen to have your site found by users of a particular community that use a specific directory, you might as well not bother submitting your site to a non SEO friendly directory. Unless the directory has a huge user base who use it to explore the Internet and it will provide you with a lot of traffic, it is of little or no value, and unless the link that it offers can be tracked and followed by the search engine spiders, it will not benefit your rankings in any way.

SEO Friendly directories are an excellent way of getting one way or reciprocal links to your site quickly and easily, and submitting a site to plenty of directories is a great way of kick starting your link building campaign
